About the Event

More and more frequently, we hear authors sharing their woes about low book sales and low returns on the hard work that goes into producing a book. In this session, we’ll explore the journey of a book through the first draft, self-editing, input from other parties, researching genre norms, various approaches to publication, and marketing.

About Bryan Mortensen

Bryan Mortensen is a writer, traveller, and the Executive Director of the . He has extensive experience programming and facilitating workshops for writers of all genres and levels, having earned a degree in English from the University of Alberta with a minor in Philosophy.  His recent book, , was long-listed in the 2023 Three-Day Novel Writing contest.  Bryan has assumed numerous leadership roles in non-profits, including serving as an Administrative Secretary for the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta, as Founder and Executive Director for the altView Foundation for Gender Variant and Sexual Minorities, and as a Caseworker for the Edmonton John Howard Society.  At his core, Bryan believes in advocating for and with people who have been traditionally marginalized.
